Five killed, 15 injured in accident at Ariyalur

At least five persons were killed and 15 others grievously injured when a cement container lorry collided head-on with a mini goods carrier at Katchiperumal near Jayankondam in Ariyalur district on Sunday night.

Most of the victims were travelling on the goods carrier. They were returning to Katchiperumal after attending a ritual organised in connection with death of a person at Pudukudi.

Sources said four persons died on the spot. Almost all those travelling on the goods carrier suffered serious injuries. The injured were admitted to hospital.

The condition of six was said to be critical. Ariyalur Collector A. Saravanavelraj, who visited the injured at the hospital, said instructions were given to the doctors to extend the best treatment to the injured.

Five new taluks created after bifurcation

The State government has bifurcated existing taluks and created five new ones in Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Sivaganga, Thoothukudi and Tiruvarur districts.
Srimushnam (from the erstwhile Kattumannarkoil Taluk) in Cuddalore district, Andimadam (Udayarpalayam) in Ariyalur district, Koothanallur (Needamangalam) in Tiruvarur district, Kayathar (Kovilpatti and Ottapidaram) in Thoothukudi district and Singampunari (Tirupathur) in Sivaganga district are the newly formed taluks, which have been created at a cost of Rs. 5 crore, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said in a statement.
In the past five years, a total of 65 new taluks have been created across the State, she added. The Chief Minister has also announced that 16 buildings for the Revenue Departments would be constructed in various places across the State at a cost of Rs. 48 crore this year.

Bishop Heber College triumphs

Bishop Heber College here has emerged victorious in the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate cricket tournament.

Twenty six colleges in Tiruchi zone, comprising Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, and Ariyalur districts, and 21 colleges in Thanjavur zone, consisting of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Pudukottai districts, took part in the tournament. Two colleges from each zone – Bishop Heber College and St. Joseph’s College (Tiruchi zone) and Khadir Mohideen College, Adirampattinam, and H.H.

The Rajah’s College, Pudukottai, (Thanjavur zone) – qualified for the inter-zonal four-team league held at Pudukottai recently.

Bishop Heber College won all its matches in the four-team league to clinch the top spot.

St. Joseph’s College (two wins and a loss) and Khadir Mohideen College (one win and two losses) finished second and third respectively.

D. Paul Dhayabaran, Principal, Bishop Heber College, and L.C. John, Head, Department of Physical Education, felicitated the students.

Volleyball tourney from tomorrow

Men and women teams from seven districts, Karaikal in the Union territory of Puducherry and ONGC Cauvery Asset would vie for honours in the ‘Third Thanthai Periyar Memorial ONGC Cauvery Cup’ Volleyball tournament to be held from September 15 here. Giving details of the three-day tournament to reporters here on Tuesday, A. Ravichandra Ramavanni, President of the Ramanathapuram District Volleyball Association said the tournament was jointly organised by the Association and ‘All India ONGC OBC and MOBC EWA.’ Nine teams each from men and women section from the districts of Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Thiruvarur, Ariyalur, Cuddlaore and Karaikal and ONGC Cauvery Asset have confirmed their participation, he said.

Besides trophies to the winning teams and medals to the players, top four teams in the two sections would be given a prize money of Rs. 1.20 lakh, he said. Best playerswould be honoured with trophies and cash award of Rs. 5,000 each, M. Somasundram, Association district secretary and K. Kannan Babu, Executive committee member said.
